  1. A catalytic converter is a device fitted to 
  2. the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in 
  3. order to reduce toxic emissions from the 
  4. engine. It converts harmful exhaust products 
  5. to relatively harmless ones by passing the 
  6. exhaust gases over a mixture of catalysts 
  7. coated on a metal or ceramic honeycomb (a 
  8. structure that increases the surface area 
  9. and therefore the amount of active catalyst 
  10. with which the exhaust gases will come into 
  11. contact).
